In the modern digital world, online security is essential to protect customer information and the confidentiality of online transactions, and this is sometimes achieved at the expense of worsening the user experience but gaining a higher level of security. One of the most common ways to ensure security is through the use of one-time password (OTP) and second-factor authentication (2FA) processes. However, the traditional SMS OTP process has several issues that can hinder the customer experience and reduce conversion; let's call it a "necessary evil".
In the old SMS OTP process, there are several steps that cause friction and can leave customers in the lurch. For example, the user must enter their phone number, wait to receive an SMS, enter the unique code received, and wait for the transaction to be confirmed. These additional steps can cause customers to abandon the process, resulting in a low conversion rate. In addition, traditional SMS OTP also presents the possibility of user error. For example, the user may make a mistake when typing in their phone number or entering the unique code. These errors can delay the authentication process and create frustration for the user. Another problem with SMS OTP is that the SMS may not arrive or may take a long time to arrive. This can cause delays in the authentication process by having to repeat the process because the code has expired. In addition, by not offering alternatives such as OTP through WhatsApp, the user must rely on having access to a mobile network to receive the SMS.
For these reasons, we set out to transform the OTP authentication process to make it a better experience without compromising any of the aspects of the OTP protocol.
WhatsAuth is a new OTP paradigm that drastically reduces friction. In this new process, the customer simply clicks "validate me" with WhatsApp or SMS, which launches the WhatsApp or SMS app with the unique code preloaded and the user simply presses send. This reduces the authentication process to a single step, which increases the conversion rate and improves the customer experience, and this new one-way or "inbound" paradigm from customer to business solves certain security compromises to make it even more secure and less costly.
WhatsAuth is very easy to implement, test and compare. Make sure to say hi to us to arrange a meeting and test the WhatsAuth OTP2.0 experience.
